What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable neuromodulator made of botulinum toxin that can reduce or prevent wrinkles and fine lines from forming. Neuromodulators work by temporarily relaxing and reducing movement in the muscles that cause wrinkles, which allows the skin to smooth out.
Younger patients can benefit from BOTOX® Cosmetic as a preventive treatment to stop these types of wrinkles from forming in the first place. Patients who already have expression lines can undergo BOTOX® injections to treat their wrinkles.
Dr. Butler has performed non-surgical facial rejuvenation in the Santa Monica area for many years. He brings artistry and a personal touch to each of his injectable treatments.
What Can BOTOX® Cosmetic Correct?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is commonly used to treat the vertical furrows between the eyebrows known as frown lines.
This botulinum toxin neuromodulator can eliminate the fine lines known as crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes.
BOTOX® Cosmetic can stop unconscious muscle contractions that create horizontal lines and wrinkles across the forehead.
Neck Muscle Bands
By relaxing the muscle bands in the neck, BOTOX® treatment provides a smoother and more youthful neck contour.
What Are the Steps of BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment?
BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment begins with a consultation with Dr. Butler. During your meeting, Dr. Butler will:
- Determine if you are the right candidate for neuromodulator treatments

As you prepare for treatment, you should take the following steps:
- Avoid smoking
- Avoid drinking alcohol

- Don’t apply topical products like makeup, sunscreen, and lotion on the day of your treatment
During your treatment, Dr. Butler will ensure the target area is clean. Topical anesthesia of the injection sites is not usually necessary, but can be provided on request.
Dr. Butler will inject the BOTOX® Cosmetic formula into the targeted muscles to inhibit them. Cold compress use is optional.
Is Downtime Needed After BOTOX®?
BOTOX® Cosmetic requires minimal downtime. Patients should not engage in strenuous athletic activities for 24 hours after treatment.
Some patients may experience minor swelling or discomfort during this period. Do not rub or massage the treated area for 24 hours after treatment.
Is BOTOX® Painful?
Neuromodulator injections usually result in minimal discomfort due to the use of topical anesthetic. Some minor soreness or inflammation may occur following the procedure. These side effects should fade rapidly within a few days.
Over-the-counter medication like TYLENOL® can help to alleviate any post-injection discomfort.
When Will I See Results From BOTOX® Cosmetic?
The results of neuromodulator treatments will become visible within one week of treatment.
Some patients need a few treatments spread several weeks apart to achieve their ideal results.
How Long Does BOTOX® Last?
The results of neuromodulator treatments are not permanent. For most patients, results will last between three and four months.
By undergoing treatment periodically, you may extend these results. Many patients undergo periodic treatments for years to maintain their youthful appearance.
How Often Should I Get BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Most patients choose to get periodic touch-up treatments every two to four months. This allows patients to maintain their results and ensure they have a cushion in case they need to delay their appointment.
